Hybrid Work: How to Bring Ergonomics to Every Workplace

Hybridarbete: så tar du med dig ergonomin till alla arbetsplatser

Hybrid work solves the question of where you work. It does not solve how your body feels when you get there. The office may have an adjustable desk, the kitchen table may be the wrong height, and the hotel room may have a desk built for postcards. The result is that ergonomics starts from scratch every time.

Short answer: the solution is not to find better desks everywhere, but to bring the height with you.

Why does ergonomics suffer when you change location?

At a fixed workplace, you set up your chair, desk, and screen once and you're done. When the location changes, that setup disappears.

What usually happens:

  • The laptop sits directly on the desk, meaning far too low.
  • The chair can't be adjusted, or it's a kitchen chair.
  • There's no option to stand, so you sit still all day.

Each of these is manageable for a single day. The problem is when they become three days a week.

How to create the same working position everywhere

The crucial thing is being able to raise the work surface, since height is what differs most between tables. A standing desk converter solves this by being placed on top of any table.

  • Adjust the height in nine steps and switch between sitting and standing.
  • Use it on any table, at home, in the office, or in a coworking space.
  • Fold it up and put it away when you need the space for something else.

If you add an external keyboard, the screen height will be right too. More on the basic setup in Ergonomic home office: the complete guide.

What should you consider if you need to take it with you?

If the solution will be moved regularly, two things matter more than anything else: the weight and how flat it is when folded.

Our Light models weigh 2 to 3,5 kilos and fold down to 2,2 cm, making them easy to fit on a bookshelf, behind a door, or in a larger bag. If it will mainly be moved between rooms in the home, weight matters less, and then an Original model may be a better choice. Routines that hold up even when the location changes

The equipment only does half the job. What makes a difference is actually changing position, and that's harder when everyday life looks different from day to day.

  • Use the 30–60 rule. Switch between sitting and standing every half hour to an hour.
  • Reserve standing for the right tasks. Video meetings, check-ins, and simpler admin work are fine while standing. Save deep focus for the position you concentrate best in.
  • Move regularly. Short movement breaks do more than just standing still, which the research is quite clear about.

What research actually shows about standing work, and what is exaggerated, we've gone through in What does the research say about standing work?

What can we learn from digital nomads?

Some have taken this further than most. Digital nomads work from mountain villages, beach cafés, and libraries in small towns, and have made flexibility a way of life.

What's interesting is that they rarely work haphazardly. They build routines, plan their days, and know their tools. A stable internet connection, noise-canceling headphones, and an ergonomic way of working are often just as important as the view.

Four things are worth taking with you, whether you're traveling or just changing rooms:

  • Respect the work environment, wherever you are.
  • Plan your day with clear boundaries.
  • Create a comfortable workspace that can be moved.
  • Prioritize movement and variation.

Their needs differ less from those of a Swedish hybrid worker than you might think: simplicity, mobility, and a workspace that combines ergonomics with flexibility.

An everyday example

Emma is a marketing consultant and works three days a week in the office, one day at home, and one day from a client office. Previously, she got back pain from working at different desks without height adjustment.

She now uses a Desk Riser Light Compact. It weighs 2 kilos and comes with a carrying case. She sets it up wherever she is and therefore has the same working position regardless of location.

Common questions

What is the hardest part about ergonomics in hybrid work?

That the settings don't travel with you. Every new place has its own desk height and chair, and without something that adjusts the height, you start over every time.

How heavy can a standing desk converter be if it needs to be carried?

If it will be carried regularly, 2 to 3.5 kilos is manageable. If it mostly just moves between rooms, the weight matters less.

Does it work in hotel rooms and coworking spaces?

Yes, as long as there is a table to place it on. It requires neither electricity nor assembly.

Do I need my own solution if the office already has sit-stand desks?

Maybe not in the office. But the point of hybrid work is that the other days should work too, and that's where ergonomics usually falls apart.
